Electronic Toll Collection - A method of collecting tolls that does not require tollbooths or stopping vehicles to pay the tolls. All is completed through electronic means such as transponders like the SRTA Cruise Card.

Electronic Toll Reader - A device that scans transponders and matches the vehicle to an electronic toll collection account for the purposes of collecting toll charges.

Express Lanes - Lanes on a highway designed for reliable trip times; are most effective when the influx of cars is regulated by pricing which requires a toll to enter the lane and a transponder to collect the toll.

Gantry - A support structure used to carry or hold electronic tolling equipment.

General Purpose lanes - The regular lanes on a highway that do not have requirements to meet to ride in them.

High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) - a vehicle with 2+ people.

High Occupancy Toll (HOT) Lane - a lane on a highway where High Occupancy Vehicles that meet the occupancy requirement can ride for free and vehicles not meeting the required occupancy threshold must pay to ride.

Managed Lanes - Lanes that have restrictions placed on them to control highway demand and mitigate congestion. These lanes usually require a certain number of occupants, a certain type of vehicle, or the payment of a toll.

Occupancy - Number of people in a vehicle.

Peak Period - For planning purposes, 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the evening. It is the time during the day when traffic volume is greatest. Also known as "Rush Hour."

Pricing - A method of controlling highway demand through changing the amount of money required to enter a specific lane.

Single Occupant Vehicle (SOV) - A vehicle with only one person.

Tolling - A method to ensure that needed roads are constructed that is achieved by the users of the road paying a toll.

Transit - A system of rail and/or bus vehicles in a metropolitan area to serve the transportation needs of the public.

Transponder - A sticker, card, or small plastic box that holds a computer microchip designed to be scanned at electronic toll readers in express lanes for toll payment purposes.

Truck Only Lane (TOL) - Lane on a highway designated for specific use by light/heavy-duty commercial trucks.

Truck Only Toll (TOT) Lane - Lane on a highway designated for special use by light/heavy-duty commercial trucks that pay a toll to for use of the lane.
