As traffic gets worse in the entire Atlanta region, one area in particular is experiencing the impat of overwhleming traffic congestion. This rapidly growing area, the I-75 corridor from the southern portion of I-285 down to SR 16 in Butts County, will be studied to determine if an innovative travel option, managed lanes, would work to address the congestion. ![]() Click to see a bigger version. BackgroundThe State Road and Tollway Authority, Atlanta Regional Commission, Georgia Regional Transportation Authority, and Georgia Department of Transportation are studying the feasibility of several pricing techniques in the I-75 South Corridor that extends from I-285 South to State Route 16 near the City of Jackson. I-75 south of Atlanta is recognized as one of the most critical transportation corridors in Georgia, connecting the greater Atalnta metropolitan area to various population, employment and distribution centers in Middle and South Georgia. This corridor is not only the primary facility supporting the explosive growth in the burgeoning southern suburbs, but it is a critical regional and national freight corridor from Michigan to Florida. The corridor also provides access between Atlanta, the major freight distribution hub of the southeast, and I-16, which connects to the Port of Savannah, the fastest growing container port in the U.S. I-75 is a heavily traveled facility with over 190,000 vehicles per day just south of I-285 and 123,000 vehicles per day in McDonough; these figures are expected to grow to over 240,000 and 182,000 respectively by 2030. Recognizing the high residential and freight growth potential along this corridor, the goal of this study is to acquire an understanding of how innovative road and pricing strategies can accomodate these expected increases in travel, while, at the same time, preserving the corridor as a catalyst for regional mobility, economic development, and as a strategic national transportation corridor. |
